Belgian Wafle Ride Kansas race report

« After a 5km neutral, the red flag drops, and we are off for a gruelling 198km mix of gravel, double tracks & single tracks.

The first crucial point of the race is only 10km away, so everyone is already fighting for positions. At the sector's entrance, I'm in second place and quickly find myself at the front, pushing the pace. At the end of it, we are a lead group of six, but a big chase group quickly comes back on us, and we are back to a front group of about 30 riders.

From then, everyone is preparing for the day's most challenging sector: a 9km single track with six mandatory dismounts. I arrive in the sector in second place after an entertaining handlebar fight with Griffin Easter. After smashing my front wheel 2-3 times, trying to follow Kerry Werner & Griffin, I slow down and finally exit the single track with a strong group of five. Quickly this group goes from 5 to 15, primarily because of an impressive chase by Peter Stetina & Nicolas Roche

Not long after, those two attack together and create a dangerous lead group of four by catching Griffin and bringing with them Innokenty Zavyalov. I'm left behind with Kerry, Cory Wallace, Alex Hoehn & Brennan Wertz, and we are losing some ground. Brennan then put in a strong dig, and I'm the only one able to follow. After a tough 10min bridge, we are back in the lead.

Next, our front group of six enters the 8km freshly built Unroad UNLTD cyclocross circuit. Griffin is trying to get away, and Peter and I are the only two able to hang on. Right after the end of the sector, we quickly establish a cooperative paceline. We know we can't afford to play strategically because we don't have a big gap on the chasing riders, and there's still a 9km MTB singletrack left.

Closely before the single track, I attack and successfully establish a 20 sec gap once at the sector's entrance. My legs and focus are on point, and I eventually exit the single track first and TT my way to my first BWR win! »
